Ft. George Island Transportation Improvement Project

Ft. George IslandSignificant data collection, master plan preparation, PD&E and 60% design (thus far) for transportation improvements of Ft. George Road and Palmetto Avenue for increased visitor attendance within Ft. George Island State Park while protecting significant existing environmental and historic resources. A new entrance is proposed bringing A1A traffic through Batten Island.

The roadway concept utilizes a boulevard system redirecting traffic though low impact areas while providing a multi-use/alternative transportation route for connection with the Ribault Clubhouse and the Kingsley Plantation. To protect the natural and historic resources, Low Impact Design (LID) drainage solutions with incorporated swales will virtually eliminate the need for retention ponds. Components include:

  • Multi-use/alternative transportation route design
  • LID stormwater/drainage design
  • Landscaping
  • Traffic study
  • PD&E documents to satisfy N.E.PA requirements
